A study from the National Council for Special Education showed that 1 in every 65 students has an Autistic Spectrum Condition. Of these, 63% attend mainstream schools, whilst 23% attend special classes in mainstream school. (NCSE, 2016)
This means that you are far more likely to encounter a child who has an Autism Spectrum Condition in the mainstream school environment than in previous years, which is a very positive step forwards. However, school can be a particularly challenging environment for a student with an ASC. We need to understand what the student's needs are and be proactive about meeting them. This way, the student can excel and get the most out of their educational years, both academically and socially.
This course will help you:
Understand more about what Autism is
Understand how this may impact the student and their view of the world
How we can make an environment more Autism friendly
Make the curriculum more accessible for a student with an ASC
Adapt classroom management and communication styles
Overcome common obstacles and difficulties in a supportive way
